Mouth watering Japanese Sushi Recipe 🍣

Making sushi at home can seem intimidating at first, but with the right ingredients and techniques, it's actually quite simple. Here's a basic guide on how to make sushi:
Ingredients:

  • Sushi rice
  • Rice vinegar
  • Nori seaweed sheets
  • Sushi-grade fish or other fillings (such as avocado, cucumber, cooked shrimp, etc.)
  • Soy sauce
  • Wasabi (optional)
  • Bamboo sushi rolling mat (optional)

Instructions:
1) Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to the package instructions, using slightly less water than usual to make it slightly firm. Once cooked, let it rest for about 10 minutes.

2) While the rice is cooking, prepare the rice vinegar mixture. Mix 1/4 cup rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt in a small bowl until the sugar and salt dissolve.

3) Once the rice is ready, transfer it to a large bowl and add the rice vinegar mixture. Use a wooden spoon to mix the rice gently and thoroughly, being careful not to break the grains.

4) Let the rice cool to room temperature. While it's cooling, prepare your fillings by slicing them into thin strips.

5) Lay a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi rolling mat, shiny side down. Wet your hands with water to prevent the rice from sticking to them, and grab a small handful of rice (about 1/2 cup). Spread the rice evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.

6) Add your fillings in a line across the center of the rice. Be careful not to overfill, or the roll will be difficult to close.

7) Lift the bottom edge of the mat up and over the fillings, using your fingers to hold the fillings in place. Roll the mat away from you, pressing gently on the roll to make it firm. Continue rolling until the top border of the nori is just touching the rice.

8) Wet the top border of the nori with a little water to help it stick, then finish rolling the mat away from you to seal the roll.

9) Remove the roll from the mat and place it seam-side down on a cutting board. Use a sharp knife to cut the roll into slices.

10) Serve the sushi with soy sauce and wasabi on the side, if desired.

Note: Sushi-making takes practice, so don't be discouraged if your first rolls aren't perfect. Keep trying, and you'll get the hang of it!
