Puffy Modak Recipe

Modak is a traditional Indian sweet dumpling that is often prepared as an offering to Lord Ganesha during festivals, especially during Ganesh Chaturthi. It is made with a sweet filling of coconut and jaggery, encased in a rice flour dough. Here's a recipe to make modaks:

Ingredients:

For the outer dough:

  • - 1 cup rice flour
  • - 1 cup water
  • - 1 teaspoon ghee (clarified butter)
  • - A pinch of salt

For the filling:

  • - 1 cup grated coconut
  • - 1 cup grated jaggery
  • - 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • - A few chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions:

1. Heat a pan on medium heat and add grated coconut and grated jaggery to it. Stir continuously until the jaggery melts and the mixture thickens. This should take around 5-7 minutes. Add cardamom powder and chopped nuts (if using), and mix well. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.

2. In a separate pan, add water, ghee, and salt. Bring it to a boil.

3. Reduce the heat to low and add rice flour gradually while stirring continuously. Make sure there are no lumps. Cook the mixture for 2-3 minutes until it forms a dough-like consistency. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.

4. Grease your palms with ghee and knead the dough while it is still warm until it becomes smooth and pliable.

5. Take a small portion of the dough and flatten it between your palms or on a greased banana leaf to form a small circular disc. Make sure the edges are thin and the center is slightly thicker.

6. Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center of the disc.

7. Carefully bring the edges of the disc together to cover the filling and form a modak shape. Pinch the edges to seal it properly. Repeat the process for the remaining dough and filling.

8. Steam the modaks in a steamer for about 10-12 minutes until they are cooked and the outer dough turns translucent.

9. Once cooked, remove the modaks from the steamer and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Modaks are best enjoyed when served warm. They can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two. Offer them to Lord Ganesha and enjoy them as a delicious sweet treat!
