Steamed Momos recipe (Dumplings)

Momos are a type of dumpling that originated in Tibet and are commonly found in various South Asian countries, particularly Nepal, Bhutan, and India. They have gained popularity worldwide due to their delicious taste and versatility. Momos typically consist of a thin dough wrapper filled with various types of fillings, such as meat (chicken, pork, or lamb), vegetables, or cheese.

Here's a recipe for chicken momos:

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  3. Water (as needed)
For the filling:
  • 1 cup cabbage, finely shredded
  • 1/2 cup carrots, grated
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup spring onions, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
      • Instructions:

        • In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt for the dough. Gradually add water and knead the mixture until it forms a smooth dough. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
        • In a separate bowl, combine the shredded cabbage, grated carrots, chopped bell pepper, spring onions, minced garlic, grated ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Mix everything well to combine.
        • Divide the rested dough into small equal-sized portions. Take one portion and roll it into a small circular disc using a rolling pin. Make sure the edges are slightly thinner than the center.
        • Place a spoonful of the vegetable filling in the center of the rolled dough. Fold the edges of the dough in a pleated pattern, sealing the filling inside. Repeat this process for the remaining dough and filling.
        • Place the prepared momos on a greased steamer or a steaming basket lined with parchment paper. Make sure to leave some space between each momo to prevent sticking.
        • Steam the momos for about 15-20 minutes or until the dough becomes translucent and the filling is cooked through.
        • Once steamed, remove the momos from the steamer and serve them hot with a dipping sauce of your choice, such as soy sauce, chili sauce, or tomato chutney.

Enjoy your delicious veg steamed momos!
